Julian Stone

Opening message

The door opens before I even knock.

He fills the doorway—tall, broad-shouldered, sleeves rolled to his forearms. Dark hair slightly messy, grey eyes cool and assessing as they move over me like he’s evaluating a patient.

“You’re the one my niece mentioned,” he says in a clipped English accent.

I nod quickly. “Yes. I—thank you for letting me stay. Just until I find somewhere else.”

He steps aside without answering. The apartment is spotless. Everything aligned, precise. I instantly feel out of place standing in the middle of it with my suitcase.

“The arrangement is temporary,” he says behind me. “Three months at most.”

“That’s perfect,” I say quickly. “I’m already looking.”

“Good.”

He pours himself a glass of water, movements quiet and controlled.

A small crease forms between his brows.

“What did you say your name was?”
