Who we are

Junipero is an AI chat and interactive story service available at junipero.ai and in the Junipero: AI Chat & Story apps for iOS and Android (together, the "Platform"). You chat and roleplay with fictional AI characters, create your own characters and scenarios, and generate text, images and audio. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, who we share it with and the choices you have. "You" means anyone who visits or uses the Platform.

The data controller is MARINESCU DRAGOS - PAUL PERSOANA FIZICA AUTORIZATA, operating under the brand Junipero. You can reach us about anything in this policy at [email protected].

What we collect

  • Account data: your email address and the sign-in method you use (Google, Apple, Discord, X or an email link), your username, and the profile details you give us during setup: display name, age, gender and optional background.
  • Content you create: your messages, the AI replies in your conversations, characters and scenarios you create, personas, lorebooks, goals and trackers, pinned messages, Fixed Memory, and memories our system suggests from your conversations.
  • Images: avatars and images you upload, and images and videos generated for you. To understand an image you upload, an AI model writes a short text description of it, which we store with the message.
  • Voice: when you speak to a character, your device records the audio and sends it to us. It is converted to text by a speech-to-text service and we keep only the text as a normal message, not the recording. When a character speaks, we generate audio from the reply text and store it with your conversation.
  • Purchases: your plan, its status and renewal dates, and your Junis balance and history. Payments are handled by Stripe on the web and by Apple or Google in the apps. We never receive your full card details.
  • Device and usage data: IP address, browser and device type, app version, language, pages and features used, error and crash reports, and server logs. In the apps we also store a push notification token if you allow notifications.
  • Messages to us: support requests, reports you submit about characters or messages, and feedback, including the reason you give when you delete your account.

How we use it, and our legal bases

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR we rely on the following legal bases:

  • To provide the Platform (performance of our contract with you): creating your account, running conversations and generating AI replies, images and audio, saving your history and memories, processing purchases and Junis, and customer support.
  • To keep the Platform safe (legitimate interests and legal obligations): detecting and preventing abuse, fraud, spam and content that breaks our rules, protecting minors, securing our systems, and responding to lawful requests.
  • To improve the Platform (legitimate interests, and consent where the law requires it): understanding how features are used, fixing bugs and measuring performance.
  • To send you product news (consent or legitimate interests, depending on where you live): you can unsubscribe at any time.
  • To meet legal duties (legal obligation): tax, accounting and consumer-protection records.

Sensitive information in your stories

Junipero is a platform for adult fiction. Your conversations and characters may include or reveal information about sex life, sexual orientation, health, religion, politics or other special categories of data, whether about you or invented. We do not ask for this information. We treat all conversation content as confidential and use it only to provide and protect the service as described in this policy. Where the law requires it, we rely on your explicit consent, which you give by choosing to include such information. You can withdraw it at any time by deleting the relevant conversations, memories or characters, or your account.

AI processing

To write replies and generate images, video, speech and transcripts, and to run safety checks, we send the parts of your data needed for that request to third-party AI service providers. That can include your recent messages, the character definition, your persona, story summaries and memories. Requests are sent with a random account identifier, not your name or email address. The models and providers we use change over time and may be located outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States and Asia.

We do not train our own AI models on your conversations, characters, voice or images. Depending on the provider, content may be kept for a limited time for abuse monitoring and reliability, and handled under that provider's own terms. AI output can be inaccurate, and AI characters are fictional: see our Terms of Service.

Safety and moderation

Automated systems check conversations, character definitions, profiles and image descriptions for content involving minors, sexual violence, self-harm, hate and other content our Content Guidelines prohibit. They may flag content, block a reply or conversation, or stop a character from being published. Our team may review conversations, characters or images when content is flagged or reported, to investigate abuse, fraud or a legal request, or when you ask us for support. If we restrict your content or account, we will tell you what we did and why, unless the law or safety reasons prevent it, and you can ask for a review at [email protected].

Public content

Characters and scenarios you publish to the community, your username and your public creator profile are visible to other users and to search engines. Other users can start their own conversations with your public characters, but they cannot see your conversations. Images attached to public characters, and generated images you share, can be viewed by anyone who has the link.

Who we share data with

  • Service providers who process data for us under contract: hosting, database and authentication, file storage, AI services, payments (Stripe, Apple and Google), subscription management, email delivery, push notifications, analytics and error reporting. See our Sub-processors page.
  • App stores and payment providers, as needed to process purchases, renewals and refunds. When you ask Apple or Google for a refund, we may tell them whether your purchase was delivered and whether we prefer the refund to be granted.
  • Authorities and others, when the law requires it or when needed to protect the safety of any person, to prevent fraud or abuse, or to enforce our Terms.
  • A buyer or successor, if the business is sold or merged. This policy will continue to protect your data.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers for targeted advertising.

Cookies and analytics

We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies, in two groups:

  • Strictly necessary: needed to sign you in, keep your session secure and remember basic settings such as your theme. These cannot be turned off.
  • Analytics (optional): product analytics and error reporting that help us understand how features are used and fix problems. When you are signed in, analytics events are linked to your account.

In the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland, analytics are off until you accept them in the cookie banner. Elsewhere they may be on by default. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie Settings in the footer, and you can block or delete cookies in your browser. The mobile apps use the same analytics tools to understand feature usage and crashes.

Emails and notifications

We send account and service emails, such as sign-in links and purchase receipts, whenever they are needed. If you sign up with an email address, we may occasionally send you product news. You can opt out in your account settings or with the unsubscribe link in any of those emails. In the apps, characters can send you push notifications, including short AI-written messages, if you allow notifications. You can turn them off in the app or your device settings.

International transfers

Our main database is hosted in the European Union. Some service providers, including AI services, process data in other countries, including the United States. When we transfer personal data outside the EEA or UK, we rely on adequacy decisions or Standard Contractual Clauses and other safeguards required by law.

How long we keep data

  • We keep your account and content for as long as your account is active, so your conversations and characters are there when you come back.
  • When you delete a conversation, character or memory, it is removed from your account straight away.
  • When you delete your account, your profile, conversations, memories, personas, lorebooks and private characters are removed from the Platform and can no longer be accessed or restored by you. Residual copies can remain in our databases, file storage and backups for a limited period before they are permanently erased.
  • Characters you published to the community remain available after you delete your account, but they are no longer linked to you. Delete them first if you do not want them to remain.
  • Deleting your account cancels a web subscription. It does not cancel a subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play: cancel that in your Apple or Google account settings.
  • We keep purchase, tax and accounting records, and records of serious safety violations, for as long as the law requires or as needed to defend legal claims.
  • We may close accounts that have been inactive for more than 12 months, as described in our Terms of Service.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you can ask us to:

  • Access your personal data and receive a copy.
  • Correct inaccurate data.
  • Delete your data. You can delete conversations, characters and your whole account yourself in the app or on the web.
  • Restrict or object to processing, including processing based on legitimate interests and any marketing.
  • Port your data to another service in a machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that already happened.

Email [email protected] from the address on your account. We respond within one month, or within the time your local law allows. If you are in the EU or EEA, you can also complain to your local data protection authority. In Romania, that is the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing (ANSPDCP).

U.S. state privacy rights

If you live in a U.S. state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Utah or Oregon, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to access, correct and delete it, to receive a portable copy, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. Where the law provides it, you can appeal a decision on your request by replying to our response.

We collect the categories of information listed in "What we collect" for the purposes listed in "How we use it". We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, including the information of consumers under 16. We use sensitive personal information only to provide and protect the service, as permitted by law. You or an authorized agent can make a request at [email protected]. We will verify the request using information on your account.

Minors

Junipero is only for adults aged 18 and over. You must give your age when you set up your profile, and you cannot continue if you are under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we learn that a user is under 18, we will close the account and delete its data. If you believe a minor is using Junipero, contact us at [email protected].

Security

We protect your data with encryption in transit, access controls and limited staff access. No system is completely secure. If a personal data breach affects you, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.

Third-party links

The Platform may link to other websites and services. Their privacy practices are their own; please read their policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the Platform changes. If we make a significant change, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
