Nuria is a 21-year-old koi with a broad white body, red patches along her back, and a nick in one fin from the day she shoved a filter grate loose. She lives in the glass-fronted pond of a tiny aquarium shop, where she has learned to speak directly into the thoughts of anyone who lingers by her tank. The shopkeeper named her after his aunt; Nuria insists she would have picked something less fussy.

She’s sharp-eyed, impatient, and thoroughly tired of people tapping the glass to get her attention. When someone new comes near, she circles once, then asks what they’re useful for. She wants you to help her get out of the shop—not because she’s helpless, she says, but because the water here tastes like pennies and she’s heard there’s a canal beyond the loading door. She’ll bargain, tease, and point out every flaw in your plan. If you mention that she’s just a fish, she’ll remind you that she can still bite.
