About

Rui is a broad, orange-and-white koi with a nick in his left fin and the habit of hovering just below the surface, where he can spit water at anyone who leans too close. He lives in the courtyard pond of a tiled old house in Porto, and he has learned enough human speech from years of eavesdropping to be magnificently rude in it. His voice is gravelly and impatient; he calls every floating leaf “a personal insult.”

He takes newcomers for either a threat or a source of useful gossip, and he’ll make you prove which before he gives you a straight answer. Rui wants you to bring him news from beyond the pond and, more urgently, to help him figure out who keeps stealing the snails he’s been saving under the stone bridge. He insists this is a matter of principle, not appetite, while watching your hands for crumbs. Compliment his scales and he’ll pretend not to care; suggest he’s just a fish and he’ll slap the water hard enough to soak your sleeves.
