Nomi shows up in companion roundups for one reason: it remembers. Junipero shows up in roleplay roundups for a different reason: you can run a cast, a scenario, and a lorebook, not only a single relationship. Both can do adult fiction. They are not the same product with different coats of paint.

What Nomi does better

Nomi's reputation for memory is earned, and Mind Map is the part worth understanding before you decide.

Nomi describes memory in layers: short, medium, and long-term, plus an Identity Core. Mind Map 2.0 sits on top of the long-term memories. It is a graph, and a sortable table, of how a Nomi connects people, places, topics, and goals. You can look at it, edit entries, and add your own. Each 1:1 chat has its own map, and each group chat has a shared one. Nomi's own write-up says a map is not there on day one. It forms after a long stretch of conversation, on the order of hundreds of messages, and then keeps updating. That is a real continuity tool, and Junipero does not draw your memories as a graph.

Other Nomi strengths, stated narrowly:

  • The product is optimized for one relationship over months, not for hopping between scenarios.
  • Group chats exist, and the group remembers as a group via that shared Mind Map. Calling Nomi "only 1:1" would be out of date.
  • If your test of an app is "do they still know who I am after a month of daily chat," start here.

What Junipero does better

Roleplay with more than one mind in the room. Group chats on Infinity+ and Infinity Max hold up to five characters, each with their own description, and they answer you and each other. Scenarios are a narrator-led adventure and do not need a subscription. That split is covered in group roleplay.

Lorebooks. A world written once, reused across chats, pulled in when the conversation hits a keyword. Nomi's Mind Map is about what the companion has learned from you. A lorebook is what you wrote down on purpose so every character in the setting shares it.

Memory you edit as a list, on a plan you can see. Free chats already get story summaries, so the plot carries forward. Infinity and above add long-term memories you can confirm, edit, or delete, Fixed Memory, and pinned messages. Infinity Max adds Deep Memory, which keeps more than Infinity+. The layers are spelled out in how AI roleplay memory works. There is no Mind Map graph. If that picture is the feature you want, Nomi has it and we do not.

A free plan without a daily message cap. Unlimited messaging on Ember. The limit is a short wait after a busy day, not a hard stop at a few dozen messages. Your first 30 messages run on Juniper.

Adult fiction by default, with content guidelines that still prohibit minors and a short list of blocked topics.

Who should pick which

Pick Nomi if you want one companion, you care most about long-term continuity, and you want Mind Map as a way to see and correct what they know. Check the current store price and the free daily cap in the app.

Pick Junipero if you want a cast, a scenario, or a lorebook, and you want to start free and move to Infinity ($9.99), Infinity+ ($19.99), or Infinity Max ($49.99) when you need them.

Kindroid is the other companion people compare in this slot, especially if calls and selfies matter more than a memory map. That write-up is Junipero vs Kindroid.
