2. Janitor AI

Best for: Power users who already own a third-party API key.

Big bot library, very permissive, technically free if you bring your own key. The downside is reliability - proxy outages are routine, and the new-user experience is "join a Discord to find a working endpoint."

3. Crushon AI

Best for: People who want a clone of Character.AI's UI but with the filter dialed down.

Decent character roster, mobile app exists. Subscription model, free plan is restrictive.

4. SpicyChat AI

Best for: A very narrow niche of unfiltered chat.

Aggressively positioned for one specific audience. Character library skews hard in that direction. Limited general-purpose use.

5. Replika

Best for: A long-term, single-companion relationship with 3D/AR.

Replika's strength is the persistent companion model. Weak for multi-character, scenario-based, or unfiltered use post-2023 policy changes.

6. Chai

Best for: Quick, mobile-first chats.

Big in 2023, rougher around the edges since. App-only, smaller character library, sometimes inconsistent quality.

7. Kindroid

Best for: One persistent companion you can call and selfie, with unfiltered chat.

Kindroid is built around a single companion, with extra Kindroid slots and group chats on a subscription. Voice calls and selfies are the strong part. On October 1, 2026 Kindroid retired its unlimited free Lite tier. New accounts get a short preview, then go read-only without a trial or subscription. Their subscriptions article lists standard at $13.99/month on the web and $15.99/month in the app stores, with Ultra and MAX as memory add-ons. Confirm on Kindroid before you pay.

8. AI Dungeon

Best for: Story-driven, narrator-led adventures rather than 1:1 character chat.

Different category really - it's interactive fiction with AI narration, not character roleplay. Worth knowing about if your goal is "tell me a story" rather than "chat with a person."
